On the very first day of walking in the care home, I was greeted by a woman in a wheelchair who asked me why I was there. I replied to her happily, "I'm thinking about working here!" Immediately a sour look took over her previously pleasant face."What? Well I'd never work here!" she barked, "I hate it here! If I were you I wouldn't work here never! I hate everyone here!" Then she paused, "Not the nurses though, I like the nurses. But all the residents, uuuugghhh, can't stand them!" That is when I noticed a few of the ladies sitting on the chairs near her, turn their heads. They were also residents, and only started to pay attention because of the unavoidable commotion. They weren't offended, in fact two of them still had their eyes closed. One lady just looked over at us, rolled her eyes, and then looked up at the ceiling.
"Oh I see," I said, trying to sound friendly. The woman in the wheelchair hurriedly rolled herself closer to me in a tizzy, and pointed at me saying, "I used to be a teacher you know, I taught everyone in here, all of them, how to spell and read!" Although she was the youngest one around I had noticed so far, and feeling her need for attention, I responded with, "Wow."
A smiling nurse came over to me overhearing the conversation, and I explained that I was here to inquire about a position. She ushered me to the manager's office.
